The University of Pittsburgh is a state-related research university, founded as the Pittsburgh Academy in 1787. Pitt is an associate of the Connection of American Colleges (AAU), which includes 62 preeminent doctorate-granting research establishments in THE UNITED STATES.

At a 11 June, 2016, ceremony, the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities will show Recognized University Teacher Nicholas Rescher using its highest scholarly honor, the Helmholtz Medal, in acknowledgement of his life-time contributions to school of thought.
Two experts at the School of Pittsburgh Cancers Institute (UPCI) have been granted the National Tumors Institute Outstanding Investigator Prize: Patrick Moore in 2016 and Thomas Kensler in 2015. Moore supports The Pittsburgh Base Couch in Innovative Tumors Research at Pitt and leads the UPCI Tumor Virology Program. Kensler is a Pitt teacher of pharmacology and chemical substance biiology and co-leader of UPCI's Tumors Epidemiology and Protection Program.
Three Pitt professors have been granted the Relationship for Psychological Science's "Rising Legend" designation in 2016 for early-career achievements and prospect of achievements and efforts: Melissa-Evelyn Libertus, an associate teacher in the Team of Mindset within the Kenneth P. Dietrich Institution of Arts and Sciences and a study scientist at the training Research and Development Centre (LRDC); Rebecca B. Price, an associate teacher in the Office of Psychiatry; and Ming-Te Wang, a co-employee teacher in the educational institution of Education and Section of Mindset and a study scientist at LRDC.
Two Pitt professors will be inducted in 2016 as Fellows of the North american Connection for the Progression of Knowledge: Patricia Kroboth, dr and dean. Gordon J. Vanscoy Distinguished Service Teacher of Pharmaceutical Sciences in the institution of Pharmacy, and Sandra Mitchell, seat and teacher of the Section of Record and Idea of Knowledge in the Kenneth P. Dietrich Institution of Sciences and Arts.
Spirits of Amistad: In the Footsteps of the Rebels, a film predicated on a reserve by Distinguished Teacher of Atlantic Background Marcus Rediker, has been honored the 2015 Richard E. O'Connor Award by the North american Historical Connection for best historical documentary of the entire year.

The North american Physical Society granted Anna Balazs, Distinguished Teacher of Chemical Executive, the 2016 Polymer Physics Reward for outstanding success in, and brilliance of efforts to, polymer physics research. Balazs is the first girl to get the prize.
David Bartholomae, the Charles Crow Couch in British, was known as the 2013 Pa Professor of the entire year by the Council for the Progression and Support of Education and the Carnegie Basis for the Progression of Teaching.
Thomas E. Starzl, Distinguished Service Teacher of Surgery, received the 2012 Lasker-DeBakey Clinical Medical Research Award--one of the world's most exclusive medical knowledge prizes--for his pioneering work in liver organ transplantation. Among Starzl's other honors is the Country wide Medal of Knowledge, the country's highest honor for knowledge and executive, and election to the Country wide Academy of Sciences (2014), the Institute of Drugs of the Country wide Academy of Sciences (1999), and the North american Academy of Arts and Sciences (1971).
In 2014, Rory Cooper of the institution of Health insurance and Treatment Sciences (SHRS) was known as a Fellow of the Country wide Academy of Inventors. In 2013, he was honored the Outstanding Civilian Service Medal by the U.S. Military for his astonishing efforts to veterans by leveraging knowledge, clinical research, and advanced technology to increase the mobility of disabled and wounded veterans. Cooper directs SHRS's Human Engineering Research Laboratories.
