Tradition
Dakota Days and nights : South Dakota's gross annual homecoming celebration, Dakota Days and nights - or D-Times - draws in spirited alumni back again to campus while making it possible for current students to show their imagination in planning and marketing the week-lengthy festivities. The celebration goes back to 1914 when President Robert. L. Slagle motivated a meeting to "promote campus harmony and spirit." The effect was "South Dakota Day" (later shortened to "Dakota Day" and today the week-long celebration "Dakota Days") as students elected royalty, built floats, paraded through the streets of Vermillion and cheered on the University's football team - in quite similar way they do today.
